Aside from courses in elementary and intermediate German (including courses on translation into German), I have taught a variety of literature courses dealing with peri- ods from the 18th through the 20th century both on the graduate and on the undergraduate level. These courses covered topics such as: German Romanticism; German Romanticism and French Symbolism; Lyric poetry in France and Germany from the “Pleiade” to the present; The German experimental novel of the late 20s and the late 60s; The pre-WWII Euro- pean experimental novel; Franz Grillparzer; Thomas Mann; Robert Musil; German literary modernism; German lit- erature from 1890-1945; The German radio play; 20th century Austrian literature; Contemporary German Litera- ture; The fin de siècle language crisis; German-Jewish literature; Theory and methods of comparative literature; German Fairytales; German Humor; The “Heimat” Concept. Individualized proposed and then (co-)taught interdisciplinary Freshman and non-tra- ditional Seminar entitled “The German Schizophrenia” four times teaching: between Fall 1970 and Spring 1973; Participated in team teaching of “Europe Between the Wars” Spring 1981 and 1988. In connection with Emory’s Summer Study in Vienna, on several occasions, I taught courses on German drama based on plays being performed at that time in the city.
Aside from teaching regular courses, I have overseen numerous graduate and undergraduate directed studies on various aspects of German literature, philosophy and cultural history. In addition, I have (co-)directed honors theses in Emory College; and Master’s theses, and dissertations in the ILA and in the Program in Comparative Literature.
